Thanksgiving at Paul's

Paul and I were clicking away with our cameras, and even had to photo each other taking photos! The spread is starting to come together!

My mom and Aunt Suzy .
They were trying to look serious for me, but I caught the best moment of all!

See those pretzels? They are orange syrup covered crunchy bits of goodness.
Rick's own recipe - he was trying to make something else and ended up with this!

Swoon!

After Texas, I drove to Kansas City, Missouri for Thanksgiving at my brother Paul's. I invited myself this year, yes I did! I emailed my sister-in-law, told her I was coming up to KC for Thanksgiving and wouldn't it be great if she hosted Thanksgiving at her house? (Notice I bypassed the big guy to get to the real power for the answer!)

Lucky for me, the big guy was cool with that and made this YUMMY salmon dip. I swiped the recipe but I can't find it now. I'm sure it's in the big box of misc. stuff that I haven't unpacked from my car. As soon as I do, I'm posting the recipe. Right after I make it again.

Ok, My sister in law just sent me the recipe. I thought it had liquid smoke in it, but I guess not.

**Edited to add the recipe:
1 (8-ounce) tub light cream cheese
2 Tbsp chopped fresh dill
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
4 ounces smoked salmon chopped, divided
Dill sprigs (optional)

Combine 1st 3 ingredients in food processor. Add half of salmon, process until smooth. Fold in remaining half of salmon. Garnish w/ Dill springs.

The kids move on to other prey!

It was like having a herd of lemmings running around. That could talk. With really cute smiles.

Molly getting ready for her picture. Isn't that smile just gorgeous? She looks so grown up. I love her hair with the barrette on the side.

This was supposed to be my awesome shot of Colton and Molly for Rafe. As you can tell, I should have taken more than one picture. I just couldn't get over how big they've gotten and how sweet, and I knew Rafe would be floored. I have no idea how I kept getting my shadow in the picture when I was the one BEHIND the camera flash, but I did.

Thanksgiving Hugfest

I can't remember why the kids decided to spontaneously start hugging people in this picture, but I love it. Especially the one of them ganging up on Sherlene. Amelia didn't care what was going on, if her cousins were doing it, she wanted in on it.

I love this one - it looks like Molly and Amelia are grinning at each other.
"High Five, Cuz!"

Denton Thanksgiving

By the time my sister came home from her vacation and I headed to Denton for some much needed (peace and quiet) rest and relaxation, I had a bacterial infection in my eye and sinusitus although I didn't know it. I just knew I was very, very tired and I'd felt like I'd had a migraine headache for a week. It was great to be at Ashley's house because it was quiet.

Did I mention the quiet? It was nice. :)

I made dinner one night while I was staying at Ashley's and Rafe's dad and aunt came over. I definitely must have been off my feed, because I realized much later that I didn't take any pictures, which is unlike me.

One of the best parts of my visit there was being able to sit at the table with Molly one night and work on one of her homework projects with her. I wish I had taken a picture of it; it turned out very cute and all I did was cut and glue things where she told me to! She's such a bright kid and so eager to learn. She'll definitely go far. I really enjoyed spending that time with her and it made me a bit wistful as I would love to be physically closer to all the kids on both sides to do projects with them.

I do have Thanksgiving pics, though, so I will post all I have. Again, I took far fewer than I normally do.

Chocolate Overload

Whenever I go to visit my sister, I try and cook with a few of the kids on something they really want to try. Something exotic, something unusual, expose them to new things, teach them new techniques.
For some reason, Vivi insisted box brownies made the cut.
Obviously, this worked for AmeliaShy, quiet Greta horning in on the camera action! :)
The first chocolate buzz wasn't enough, so Amelia snuck off to Katie's room with a giant chocolate cookie. She didn't want to hear anyone tell her she couldn't eat it, so she put santa socks on her feet and a big pink hat over her ears. (Yes, she did pick out her own accessories) Then Mommy made her do pushups for sneaking off to eat. Or was that Aunt Ziza making her do pushups for using poor grammar?

Mean, mean mommy!
(Just kidding. She randomly decided to do pushups on her own in Denton. Probably to work off all that chocolate. Note the Santa socks peeking out of the fuzzy Nordic boots she added to her ensemble.)

Doing Chores

One day at Lisa's, I told the kids they all had to do chores, no excuses. Even Amelia!

Texas, before Thanksgiving

Amelia making Lucianna smile I love this grin - you can't tell but she's grinning at Amelia.

Love that smile!

And especially this one!

Asa

"Don't ask me, I just live here. Those other kids are crazy!" I love Asa's smile in this picture. He's always had the kind of smile that makes you secretly suspicious he knows a lot more than he's telling, but since he's not involved he's keeping it to himself. Even when he was 2. :)

Plotting Cousins

Luci: "uh oh. This doesn't look so good"
Mia: "Greta, here's what we'll do..." Greta: "I think it will work! Great Plan"
Luci: "Get me outta here!"

Luci: "Thanks, Aunt Wally! You saved me!"

Look at those eyes! Isn't she just adorable?!

My sister

This picture is for everyone in our family who has never seen Lisa with straight hair. Looks great, doesn't it? Her hair is very curly. The day I arrived at her house, she was getting it cut in the kitchen for $10! And the stylist was awesome. So I had mine cut also. That was service!

First Stop - Texas!

As soon as we hit the door of my sister's house, Amelia was off and running to the backyard. It was such a relief to be able to let her play outside and run around in a fenced yard. That's the only thing I really don't like about where we live - the yard is extremely small and not fenced in. Although there are a lot of green spaces on the base, it would be so wonderful to just open the door and let her run. Eli, Vivi, Mia

First day my sister and her husband were gone. This was right after school and the house was quiet and industrious. Dinner was bubbling away and I thought the whole week would be this easy. The kids were working on their projects, and even Amelia wanted in on the action.

Puddle Jumping

It was a wonderful, rainy day today. I can't believe how mild the weather is after -20 windchill, ice and snow storms in Missouri. After the rain, we went for a walk along the marsh and inlet to do some puddle jumping.
These two pictures were taken just a few feet away from our house.
Amelia jumped up on this manhole cover and said, "I tall now!"

She picked out her outfit again. Note the boots on the wrong feet! Oh well. They were a garage sale find, for $2. A little bit big for her feet, but waterproof and perfect for splashing in puddles.

Rafe, this one's for you...

I asked her what she was doing, and she said, "Make a tea Daddy" (making tea for Daddy). She's pretty darn happy with Daddy right now. He sent a beautiful Iraqi box to her for a present today. I saw it in the mailbox and went inside to get her so she could have the excitement of taking it out of the mailbox. It helps her to realize that someone else sent her something, rather than it just showing up in the house. She was very excited to open it and see the beautiful beads inside and the letter from him. She was jabbering away and I couldn't tell what she was saying, but I picked out "box my DADDY!", very possessive and happy about both the box and daddy! :) Then she went to sit down in front of her stove to make daddy some tea. Before she sat down she asked me if it was ok to put the box on the floor. You can't tell but it's right behind her. What a sweet girl.

Catching up

I'm going to try and post the pictures from the past two months in the next week or so, starting with the first part of the trip in Texas. My laptop wireless is working now (thanks paul). We had such great times with my family and Rafe's family that I want to make sure I put up the highlights for Rafe to see. It's so neat when he calls me and mentions the pictures that he was able to see or the stories he read about; helps keep him feeling in contact with everyone.

Do you remember me?

YouTube Video

This was supposedly made by a 15 year old girl. I've seen it before, and it never fails to bring me to tears. When I watch it, I am reminded of the men we have met since TBS who will never come home to their families. One in particular stands out - he and his wife helped us move into our apartment in Quantico right after we married. He was an outstanding Marine, husband, and father.

Thank you to everyone who has written to Rafe while he's been deployed. There aren't too many of you, but every letter of support and love you've written has been deeply appreciated and very welcome by him.

"How old do you have to be to die? he said & I said I didn't think anybody was ever old enough & that made sense to him since he was still new to the world & remembered how forever had been." (STORY PEOPLE)

Hard at Play

I love it when she dresses up with all her stuff.
Amelia has better fashion sense than I do! :)
She looks like such a little mommy in this picture!

By the way, this little doll carriage was FREE. I saw it on the neighbor's curb for trash pickup when I was in Dallas. I begged Zeke to sneak outside and get it and run back in with it. It was mangled and lopsided; but that didn't stop Greta, Vivi and Amelia from playing with it constantly. I took it with me to KC and my dad fixed it with brute force! Yeah dad! So now it's a perfectly working little doll carriage and she loves it. Not bad for my first dumpster dive!

Home at Last

Amelia didn't waste a second when we hit the house Thursday night. She immediately ran from room to room, revisiting all her toys like they were old friends. I kept hearing, "Oh! Look a' dis!" as she was racing around and pulling out her favorites.

This is the first outfit she had on.
She's wearing gloves, hat and heels to cook in - a true Southern lady!

"I fissin breh-fust, mommy"

Amelia was happy to help me unpack her new fairy wings (a Christmas present from her Secret Santa). She pulled together the rest of her outfit by rummaging through the house and bringing me things to put on her, including her hairband. That red basting brush is actually hers - she fell in love with it at a Le Creuset outlet store. She was using it as a wand last night, but I'm not sure what she's doing to the hippo bath puppets!

My favorite part of driving long distances...

Noah and Elliot

One of my wonderful sisters-in-law started her own blog! About dang time! Now we need to get the rest of the family on board so I can be nosy and peek at what they are doing! :)

Anyway, we spent Thanksgiving and Christmas in Kansas City and she has some great pictures of family and of Amelia on her blog.

We're home, We're home!

YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!

We're such cosmopolitan travelers. Last night we had dinner in Nashville; today we breakfasted in Birmingham and lunched in Atlanta.

Too bad it was all drive through!!!

We decided to get off the road early last night, to let the crazies do their thing on New Year's Eve. Amelia and I went to bed early, and we were up at 3 am and on the road by 4. I have discovered it's the best time of the year to be driving - everyone is either still asleep or just finally passed out and no one is on the road.

Amelia was such a trooper on this trip. She played with her sewing dolls, her coloring books, her "kwishy piggy" (squishy piggy), flash cards, loveys, hats and lots and lots of books. Two days of driving home, over 20 hours on the road all together, and I only had to whip out the DVD player during the final two hours of the trip.

Unfortunately for her, I had forgotten how many juice boxes I gave her on this trip. You can guess the end results if you're a mom, and if not, I'll leave it to your imagination. :( Poor thing. I'm a bad mom.

Best of all, my husband called to check on me when we were about 2 hours from home! He said he couldn't sleep and was wondering if we were home yet, so he called to check. He couldn't stay on the phone long but it was so nice to hear his voice to start out my new year. I LOVE
YOU, HONEY!
